Today is my last day at Magic Pixel Games, and my first day as a independent developer.
Magic Pixel gave me and a small team some time to do some VR prototyping earlier this year. I had already done some VR work on the side – adapting SMS Racing into a VR experience is an ongoing project – but I hadn’t thought of it as anything more than a fun hobby until I started playing with it more regularly. And then Oculus Connect happened, and I experienced the Crescent Bay demo. I saw things that I didn’t think had been invented yet. My thoughts of “VR is probably a few years away” changed to “oh crap, it’s ready now, and we’ve got catching up to do.” I believe that VR will be bigger than games, and I want to contribute to it.
Magic Pixel was my first real job in the games industry, and it shaped most of what I know about game development. I’m sincerely going to miss the talented people I got to work with there every day. I will be forever grateful to everyone there who took a bet on me coming out of college, and brought me out to California. Magic Pixel gave me priceless opportunities to learn and grow, and they leave me set up for success in more ways than I can express. There was no better place I could have been over the past four years, and although I am comfortable with my decision, it doesn’t make it any easier to say goodbye.
I’ll be sticking around Los Angeles. I’m already at work on a few new games, and I’m hopeful that there will be some other things I can share soon too. See you at DICE and GDC!
Congrats buddy can’t wait to see what you do with your VR work
